TENURE TRACK FACULTY POSITION – Biochemistry (https://apply.interfolio.com/67120)

 

THE DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY AND BIOCHEMISTRY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND, BALTIMORE COUNTY (UMBC) invites applications for a full-time tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level.  Applicants are expected to establish a vigorous and externally funded research program in any sub-discipline of an area broadly defined as Biochemistry (e.g., bioorganic, bioinorganic, bioanalytical, biophysical chemistry and chemical bBiology).  Candidates must have an outstanding record of scientific achievement, demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals. The successful applicant should have a PhD and postdoctoral experience in any of the sub-disciplines listed above. The successful applicant will be expected to teach at both the undergraduate and graduate (PhD and MS) levels primarily biochemistry courses. Importantly, the applicant should demonstrate an understanding of and commitment to diversity and inclusive excellence in both teaching and research programs.

Post Doctoral Fellow in Conservation Science (http://apply.interfolio.com/60113)

The Baltimore SCIART consortium (sciart.umbc.edu) is a collaboration between the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC), the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore, Johns Hopkins University and Morgan State University.  Researchers in the consortium are engaged in collaborative research in the area of conservations science, specifically the interface between chemistry, materials science and engineering and art. The consortium offers a summer research program to undergraduate students from Baltimore area institutions in the area of conservation science. The consortium is seeking a postdoctoral scientist for a 3-year research and education fellowship in the field of conservation science beginning May 1, 2019. The postdoctoral fellow will report to Baltimore SCIART consortium director. Prof. Zeev Rosenzweig of the Department for Chemistry and Biochemistry UMBC. The postdoctoral fellow will play a key role in managing the summer research program of the Baltimore SCIART consortium. Activities will include but not limited to developing research projects that are appropriate to undergraduate students with limited research experience in conservation science, student recruitment and selection, educational and public outreach activities, and leading a research focus area during the summer. In addition, the postdoctoral fellow will pursue a cutting-edge research project in the field of art conservation science working together with conservation scientists, conservators, and conservation fellows at the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore and the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC.  The goal of the research project will be to develop fluorescence spectroscopy and imaging techniques to detect and map fugitive lake pigments in works of art, specifically paintings and works on paper.

Required Education, Experience, and Skills

Ph.D. in chemistry/physical science combined with experimental research experience and an ability to conduct academic research, interest and experience in supervising undergraduate research and in outreach activities and demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusive excellence are required. The successful candidate will have a high level of scientific achievement and a strong interest in a career in art conservation science. Experience with microscopy of diverse types, image analysis, and advanced computational skills desirable. Strong oral and written communications skills required. Demonstrated interest in the visual arts, record of publication and/or presentation, and knowledge of one or more foreign languages preferred.

Natural Sciences Professoriate-Track Faculty Research Fellowship, 2019-2021 (apply.interfolio.com/53007) 

 

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) invites applications for the Natural Sciences Professoriate-Track Faculty Research Fellowship.  The purpose of the Program is to support promising scholars interested in a potential tenure track faculty appointment at UMBC and who are committed to diversity and inclusiveness.  The Department welcomes applications from candidates with research and teaching interests in all areas of Chemistry or Biochemistry, and with diverse experiences, including candidates from industry, academia, or government laboratories.  We are particularly interested in receiving applications from individuals who are members of groups that historically have been underrepresented in the STEM professoriate.

The fellow will be appointed as a Professoriate-Track Research Fellow for a two-year term beginning July 1, 2019, with the ultimate goal of preparing candidates to be competitive for tenure-track academic faculty positions. The fellow will receive a starting stipend commensurate with experience, health benefits, $5,000 for conference travel and preparation of scholarly work, up to $5,000 in instrument services, up to $10,000 for supplies /consumables, lab space, office space with computer, library access, and other privileges at the university.  During the two-year term of appointment, most the fellow’s time will be devoted to pursuing research. In addition, the fellow will teach one course per year. Highly experienced research and teaching mentors will meet with the fellow regularly to provide guidance on developing a pedagogically sound teaching philosophy and plan, and improving the skills needed to pursue an academic research career at a research intensive university, including proposal and manuscript writing, and technical presentation skills. The fellow will also benefit from professional development opportunities across the campus.

Eligibility: Candidates who will hold PhD degrees in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or related fields at the time of appointment are eligible to apply. Degrees must be conferred before the time of appointment.  Candidates with PhD degrees, with or without postdoctoral experience, are also eligible to apply.
