Postdoctoral Fellowship on Laser Induced Damage in Nonstandard Tissue

Position Location: U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH), Office of Science and Engineering Laboratories (OSEL), Division of Biomedical Physics (DBP), Laser and Optical Radiation Safety (LORS) Research Program.

Position Description: This Postdoctoral Research Fellowship position is associated with the LORS Research Program at the OSEL’s Division of Biomedical Physics. The primary LORS objective is focused on the development and implementation of advanced regulatory science tools, protocols, and maximum permissible exposure (MPE) database for laser radiation safety evaluation of nonstandard tissues and new safety concerns associated with multivariable spectral (UVC-to-NIR), temporal (CW-to-femtosecond) and spatial characteristics of laser products used in emerging medical devices. The Postdoctoral Fellow will be involved in full-time research studies for accomplishing the LORS Program objectives. The Fellow will perform benchtop, ex-vivo, and in-vivo tissue research on photothermal, photomechanical, and photochemical laser-induced damage of nonstandard tissues with serious and frequently reported safety concerns such as cortical brain, mucosal, and kidney tissues, as the currently specified standard MPE damage thresholds are related to the ocular and skin tissue only. This work will involve development and implementation of advanced imaging, sensing and analytical tools for quantitative evaluation of tissue damaging as well as characterization of MPE damage thresholds and elucidation of factors that influence this process.

Qualifications: Eligible candidates should have extensive training, knowledge, and lab experience in biomedical optics, fiber optics, optical imaging, sensing, and computerized data acquisition. It should also include experience working on ex-vivo and in-vivo animal studies.

Position Terms: The position is full-time for one year with a potential extension depending on the available funding and Fellow performance. Annual salary is highly competitive. This is a term fellowship, not a federal employee position. Please send a CV and contact information for two references to Dr. Ilko K. Ilev (ilko.ilev@fda.hhs.gov).
