The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Counterterrorism and Forensic Science Research Unit’s (CFSRU) provides technical leadership for the FBI as well as for other law enforcement and intelligence agencies through applied research and development.
What will I be doing? As a participant with the Counterterrorism and Forensic Science Research Unit’s (CFSRU) Visiting Scientist Program (VSP), you will have an opportunity to enhance your professional development and increase your research capabilities and contributions by participating in forensic research initiatives utilizing state-of-the-art equipment under the mentorship of CFSRU scientists. The VSP will expose you to a research environment in a high security government facility and provides an opportunity to perform research in areas of interest unique to law enforcement and national security.
You may be involved in research including:
- Human identification
- Detection of Bio-threat agents
- Detection of explosives and drugs
- Characterization and comparison of forensic materials
- Elemental analysis of trace evidence
- Mass spectrometry applications to chemical and biological analyses, including IRMS
- Development of instrumental methods
- Evaluation of field portable instrumentation
- Advancement of forensic chemistry, specifically in toxicology, and trace volatiles
- Advancement of techniques for Imaging and Visualization
Under the guidance of a mentor, you may be involved in some or all of the following:
- Conducting searches of scientific literature
- Designing experimental plans
- Conducting field tests
- Performing analytical laboratory analyses
- Analyzing instrumental data/ documenting results
- Preparing and presenting research findings to diverse audiences, both orally and in writing

The details:
As a participant you will receive a stipend as support for your living and other expenses during this appointment. Stipend rates are determined by the CFSRU officials and are based on your academic and professional background. Relocation expenses, not to exceed $1,000, incurred in relocating from your current address to Quantico, Virginia (if more than 50 miles from the address shown on the application), may be reimbursed. You will receive a travel allowance of $5,000 per appointment year to cover travel-related expenses to scientific and professional development activities. The initial appointment can be for the summer or for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of FBI contingent on the availability of funds. The appointment can be made on a full-time or part-time basis.

Development of Chemical Sensors through Peptide Interactions
A research opportunity is available in the Biomaterials & Assembly Branch at DEVCOM Army
Research Laboratory (ARL) in Adelphi, MD. A post-baccalaureate opportunity is available for
the development, synthesis, & characterization of peptide-based receptors for detecting
chemical/biological targets of interest. This work supports colorimetric detection technologies for
sensing chemical threats. Work is expected to include the chemical synthesis and assessment
of affinity kinetics exhibited by peptide receptors derived from One-Bead-One-Compound
(OBOC) peptide library screens against protein targets of interest.
Backgrounds in Chemistry, Biochemistry & biochemical engineering and related disciplines are
preferred.
Key Responsibilities:
- Chemically Synthesize & purify peptide-based receptors by Solid Phase Peptide
Synthesis (SPPS)
- Characterize peptide – target binding by high-throughput and kinetic assays
- Conduct screening of OBOC libraries against targets of interest
- Support and Develop receptor integrations strategies into various sensing platforms

Fellowship Details
Fellows receive a stipend, health insurance, and a generous allowance for education and professional development. The fellowship appointment is for one-year, renewable for a second year, with opportunities for peer-to-peer learning provided for each cohort. Stipends are determined by their degree level and years of relevant professional experience and begin at $40k for a Bachelor’s degree, at $55k for a Master’s degree, and at $70k for a Doctoral degree. Reimbursement of relocation expenses may also be provided, if applicable.
Nature of Fellowship Appointment
The Clean Energy Innovator Fellowship program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) through its Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE). The program is administered by the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE). During the appointment, the fellow will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, Oak Ridge Associated Universities, DOE, the host institution, or any other office or agency. Instead, the fellow will be considered a participant and will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.
The fellowship is open to recent Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral graduates in fields relevant to electricity generation, transmission, or distribution. If more than five years since receipt of degree, the applicant must have an academic background and experience in a relevant field and must be seeking to gain new knowledge/experience in order to expand career opportunities or to advance professionally.

Science Technician II –
TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS
Lab work: The candidate will participate in the execution of laboratory experiments, and general lab hygiene. He/she will operate various instruments, including a gas chromatography/mass spectrometer and a flame ionization detector, and record results, following established protocols.
Fieldwork: The candidate will occasionally participate in the execution of field experiments and sample collection at known contamination sites.
Office work: Science The candidate will record and tabulate data on a computer workstation as outlined by government technical liaison.
